Recently, I've been thinking I'd give this another try...
A lot has happened since my last post. I tried an auction site and found
that it didn't really work out. (Maybe I'll try it again at a later
date!)

I also joined a co-operative artists gallery in downtown Halifax, Nova
Scotia (Canada),

And I closed down my old website and set up a new site on artstorefronts.com.

By end of 2015, I'd started feeling pretty well blah about my own style. It felt like my artwork was fading into a grey zone where subtle became so monotone that I couldn't care less if my paintings existed or not. Sometimes, getting stuck in a rut simply means that you stop remembering to stretch your own limits, so then you become a victim of your own habits.

It seemed I had found my comfort zone, and I was defending it bravely. So much so, painting was well on it's way to becoming a chore...
Why bother?
I'd read that book, watched that movie, done that 'thang' so many times it was rote!

So, I Decided to Become Vivid!

On that note, I'll leave you with something I've created in the last couple of weeks...

By experimenting with my old tablet and a newer version of Paint Shop Pro I think I really achieved 'vivid'.

Don't forget to check out www.teresayoungartist.ca

If you paint for years, eventually, you can become hemmed in by your own style from time to time and need a break. I guess it's a matter of dipping your toes in the water outside your own comfort zone. A matter of figuring out if the direction you want to move in.
For years, I've moved into abstract areas, with predominance in abstraction, maybe thirty percent surrealism, and then every once in a blue moon, something that is more realistic, but is still based in fantasy.

On the side, I've played around with artisan crafts in the form of painting assorted wooden boxes, candlesticks and painting on glass. The fish and cats with Jerry Walsh are a natural extension to this trend.
It's a nice table, and I use it for many things because it folds up.
I haven't written a post here for over a year, and I thought I'd catch up. Lately, I've been experimenting around with my art, stretching my boundaries, trying to figure out what works for me at this stage in my evolution.

It started with the Haida Fish I painted for the Peggy's Cove Festival of the Arts 'Go Fish' competition last year. I really enjoyed that and thought I'd pursue that road for a bit. I met Jerry Walsh, the artisan who does the fish sculptures and we decided to collaborate.
Which was really great! Jerry is a wonderful and versatile artist who has great ideas.
For that, I had to figure out something everyone could relate to as a painting subject, and I settled on birds. You can see on the left, it's in a style I thought I left behind years ago, realism....
And following that, I started trying out other paintings in a more realistic fashion... I guess after you stay away from it for really long, it's all new again!
I figure, why limit myself? I'm versatile, so I might as well move in any direction I please.
I'm posting here a cross section of where I've gone this year as a painter. As you can see, I'm not sticking to one area!
Of course, I have cats because I love them, they are affectionate, interesting and fun to pet...
Also, I found after my eighteen year old cat died a couple of years ago, I just couldn't sleep well at night without that feeling of a cat in the room. Weird! The room felt less comfortable, odd to say.

Anyway, back to what reminded me about why I have cats at all... And the answer is, comic relief!
Sometimes, they do things that are just downright hilarious...
So, basically, you are sitting there, minding your own business, and the animal that always lands on it's feet, doesn't.

Or, the epitome of grace that walks among us, walks, and is definitively not graceful...
And when they go off the rails, they are so totally shocked and appalled by what is happening, that it only adds to how funny the situation is!

Have you ever seen a cat fall backwards off a coffee table? Their expression is priceless! That's what I witnessed yesterday, and boy, I didn't stop laughing for ten minutes!
The other thing that's pretty entertaining what we do to them... They are so stiff with dignity, I don't think pet owners can really resist it!
I have a yearly tradition of putting these antlers I bought at a pet store years ago on whatever cats don't move fast enough to avoid me... (Yes, I tend to do this every year!)
But nowadays, you don't even have to do this type of thing yourself!
The Internet is full of YouTube videos of cats in embarrassing situations, and they are funny, some incredibly so.
I feel sorry for the cats, but on some level, I know they deserve it;-)Teresa Younghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00565322758688058310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-847947158651684642.post-74573171562165065252013-12-02T15:53:00.000-04:002015-03-14T14:09:51.532-03:00Recent Glass Paintings by Teresa Young

First, I prepare the glass for the paint by using a prep fluid I buy at Michael's and let it dry overnight.
For the next step, I sometimes prepare a design in advance and draw it on a white piece of paper which I put behind the glass as a guide (only works with clear glass this way...). And you can also draw on the glass with permanent ink that is not too slippery. Just make sure that the liquid leading completely covers your guide lines... The other side effect of drawing directly on the glass is that you see the lines through the other side, which I don't like, so I don't do that myself.
-Usually though, I play it by ear and do the drawing using the liquid leading that I apply to the glass. The initial drawing is very, very simple, like the photo at left, because applying the coloured paint always goes over the initial lines, so I have to redo the lines again after the coloured glass panes are done. This also makes sure that the leading ends up being raised like real leading which increases its similarity to real stained glass visually.
I have pen tips that I screw onto the tops of the liquid leading bottles I buy at Michaels. These allow me to create much finer lines than what the bottles of liquid leading create originally. I bought the pen tips at Michaels as well, but I have no idea what they are designed to be used for normally though.
I usually buy frames with glass on sale and use those myself. What I've done is remove all the backing from the glass in the frame, then put glazier's putty (available from some hardware stores, it's grey in colour and dries fairly stiff over time) over the edges of the glass and then put small pieces of wood over the putty and paint the wood black. Once the putty dries, the wood is securely held in place, just like a window frame...
Sometimes, (when I have the time and money), I put another layer of glass over the back of the glass again, with special glass that filters ultravoilet light out to preserve an especially good glass work that I want to hang in a west facing window that get a lot of light. Direct sunlight when the sun is especially bright can fade the colours over time, so this helps a lot. But it can get expensive.

Back to the process itself.
I have many bottles of glass paint that I use for the painting, you can use qtips and toothpicks to refine what you've put down on the glass for coloured areas, I used to use the toothpicks a lot to remove bubbles in the glass paint layer at the beginning, but now, I find the even side to side motion I use works just as well. But this stroke has to be very even in motion to avoid bubbles, and never, ever shake the bottles or it will take overnight for the bubbles to settle out of the paint. Otherwise, you end up with a paint that ensures bubbles over every square inch. Which, now that I think it over, could an interesting effect in itself!
I use many layers and overlapping colours to create shading and visual interest and also to avoid that plastic/fake look that I dislike so much!
Different paints give varying levels of opacity and translucency, so you've got a large range to play with. I use cameo ivory and white pearl for dotting a lot because they are fairly opaque and give nice effects.
Once the paint layers have dried, I use liquid leading over top to clean up the painting and smooth out the finished product. I use it to balance the composition if necessary, and correct any air bubbles I might have missed by putting in new divisions of paints to hide them. I add different colours to the new panes so that it looks like I planned the 'accidents' as part of the original composition. I often end up with something new and totally different that I like much, much more.
Once I'm satisfied, I leave the painting dry for a week, and then varnish it with glass varnish (two coats), to protect it from the elements and allow it to be washed with gentle soap and water in the future.

Slate Blue is pretty transparent and it's great for shading
other colours because it gives a nice, attractive shadowy effect, as does charcoal black and champagne.
Amber is one of my favourite underpainting colours because it works with pretty well everything as well as by itself.

Rose is especially beautiful and mixes well as well... High colour paints that work well are morning glory, aqua, fresh lime, sapphire, ruby red and so on. But I'm pretty careful with those, because the larger the area of high colour, and the smoother it is, the faker it looks. I also use crackle a lot to create texture in larger areas, it work extremely well and gives a close match to a lot of stained glass textures.

As you can see by the glass painting at right, I used a lot of very bright red in large panes in the composition. To combat the fake plastic look that I initially ended up with, I used dotting of another paint colour to texture the panes and give visual interest. It also made it reminiscent of pointellism or ink drawing by using the dots, which made it attractive.
Putting crackle over a paint layer that is dry, cracks the paint evenly, giving one style of effect. Putting it on a wet layer, cracks it so that the edges get extra paint stuck in it, so it's almost like bolding the broken edges, putting wet paint over dry crackle areas give pools of darker paint in the cracks, and put wet paint over wet crackle layers gives the same effect as layering them in the opposite order. There are other types of glass paints like crackle that give textures available, but I haven't really experimented with them much as they don't appear to work as well as crackle does...
Then, I leave the painting dry for a week, and varnish it with glass varnish (two coats), to protect it from the elements and allow it to be washed with gentle soap and water in the future.

I've been at a roadblock lately, looking at my own art with a different viewpoint. It just doesn't seem to work for me anymore! Not that I've given up painting and drawing, but I've been mulling things over and figured out what the source of my dissatisfaction is...

I seem to have descended into the gloomy depths somehow and lost that bang of colour! Maybe too much overworking of detail, a loss of freshness and verve somehow.

So, I took a step back to figure out where I'm going and how I want to change my direction to point there...

It's like learning to zig when you normally zag... I've made a bit of return to glass painting, because that particular medium forces me to more simplicity. A return to the roots of my own painting style in some ways, I believe. It will be an interesting experiment anyway!
Hello everyone! This weekend (Saturday, July 20th [today] and tomorrow) is the 2013 Studio Tour weekend for the Peggy's Cove Festival of Arts. Since I don't have a studio, I'm hanging my artwork at Bay Hammock's Company in Seabright, NS. Which is on the lighthouse route, about fifteen minutes down from Peggy's Cove itself. (Thanks Anne and Archie!)
I'll be demonstrating acrylic painting (in other words working on a current painting) at the store today and tomorrow from 1PM until 4PM as part of the Studio Tour weekend!

Here are the pieces I've created in honour of this year's festival, and they will all be hanging at Bay Hammocks for the weekend. Feel free to come down and buy an original painting by me if you're in the area! Thanks!
We had six artists doing their art for people to watch (live!) and they called us 'Fresh Fish Artists'.... Which is pretty funny, because I found out when I was doing a bit of preparation practice that I cannot do a fish to save my life! Hahahah!

So I did the closest I could come, I painted a mermaid. What? She may be imaginary, but she is half fish! LOL!

Here's the painting I worked on during the opening night. It's only about two thirds done, but people at the event got to see me paint this from the barest of underpaintings to the current state over the course of a few hours.
We have the Peggy's Cove Festival of the Arts going once again and our Opening Gala on Thursday, July 11th at Shining Waters Marina in Tantallon, NS. Tickets are $20 and are available through the PCAFA website.

There will be a silent auction of arts and crafts, with six member artists will be demonstrating art at the event. I'll be one of the artists demoing, the theme is fish based art, and since I like painting, (and not fish, generally!) I'll be stretching that definition by working on an acrylic painting of a mermaid;-) There will also be a live band, a silent auction, a fish tank game, and other things going on at the gala, so if you are in the area around that time, don't miss it!

Events will be going on throughout the festival, including live band concerts, the Paint Peggy's Cove weekend event, and other events. Primarily a “coastal festival’ - this is an early summer celebration of the wealth of artistic talent in an area just south of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The focal point is our beautiful St. Margaret’s Bay with its iconic Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse.

Our resident artists live along Highway #333 (Prospect Rd. - Peggy’s Cove Rd.) parts of Highway #3 (Hubley to East River) and the Hammond’s Plains Rd south of Pockwock Rd. or on the many sideroads leading to picturesque villages. Our STUDIO TOUR 2013 extends from Prospect to East River, following the coast. See our Get Involved page for details.

We offer two weekends of signature events - Paint Peggy’s Cove and a Studio Tour, along with a feature concert. Plans for mid-week activities are in the works. Our festival is growing! We plan to make waves on the art scene here in Nova Scotia!

The festival is also a celebration of fine artisans, musicians and performance artists. Concerts, demonstrations and workshops will become part of the event over time. In this area so near Halifax, you’ll find over 70 artists living in a wonderful setting where forested hills meet the sparkling Atlantic Ocean.
This is a series of blog posts I'm starting to try to help others learn how to draw as I did.

I used to do these techniques when I was initially learning portraiture from another artist that was trained in Germany. Of course, over time, I've stopped using the guidelines, as my muscle memory seemed to train in position and guaging the proportions by eye and hand. But this is a good way to learn, as it gives discipline and helps create a good result.

I started drawing faces as a very young child, but never caught a likeness until I was ten. After that, I was on fire! I drew constantly trying to get that almost mystical connection, the portrait that looked like whoever I was drawing...

I went to Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada) constantly when I was thirteen and on vacation there one summer, learning from the portrait artists... They took pity on a young girl and let me sit and watch, and after awhile, they starting looking at what I was drawing and helping me! It was a wonderful two months...

Later on, I started selling portraits on my own (very cheaply!) to fund private art lessons to learn portraiture from a local artist where I lived, her husband was in the military, so she had originally trained with a classically educated portrait artist in Germany... She learned in the late fifties... I learned from her in the early seventies.

Now, let's take a look at how to draw the nose. The previous section was on drawing the overall guidelines and how to draw the eyes. See the previous post for this info.

Noses: They come in all shapes and sizes and on top of that, they are constantly stretched and pulled out of their 'resting' state by the facial muscles, so you can get many different views of a specific nose even viewed face on.
The larger the size of the nose, the more distinct the lines (and later on in this workshop, the shadowing) around it…
Generally, within the framework of the lines we have added to the egg shape, the nose fits centrally in the face.
The length of the bridge itself is approximately the length of the third eye we discussed earlier. Even when you can't see the nostrils, it's a good idea for composition's sake, to draw the line delineating the bottom edge of the nose darker, to give the drawing depth and make the nose appear to project.

If you look at ninety percent of people, and use your thumb as a measuring stick to judge, you will find that the width of the space between the eyes in full front view, edge of inner tear duct to inner duct, equals the width of the eye itself.

Kind of creepy looking, isn't it? Wow! But it won't stay like that, this is just for illustration purposes.

I've divided the eye socket circles again, with a line between the centre line d and the top A and labeled the line j.

Unless we are in a horror movie, we never see the full eyeball, since they are covered top and bottom with skin and muscles.

I designated the halfway points of the eyes for illustration purposes with lines labeled h and i.

So, I've sketched in very basic eyes here, so that you can see a few things:

First, the eyebrows always extend out past the eyes; they're never lined
up with the outer edge of the eyes.

Second,
as long as you observe the 'third eye' distance, the viewer is more comfortable
with the appearance of the face in general. It just 'feels right'.

Start changing
that inner proportion and your portrait will just look wrong, wonky, and out of
whack. It actually makes one feel uncomfortable when you look at it. You can
make your eyes proportionally larger or smaller, just the spacing in between
seems to be the most sensitive point. Most portrait artists will unconsciously slightly
enlarge a person's eyes when they draw them, to make a more attractive
portrait. Probably because we are all hard-wired to find children attractive,
making the eyes slightly larger appeals more strongly. Children actually have
larger eyes than they do once they reach their full growth. Since we're born with
our final eye size and our faces grow around it as we age.

Don't go too far on enlarging the eyes to
enhance the portrait, or you can end up with a cartoonish look. Too far would
actually be the point where the outer edge of the eye lines up with the eyebrow
end above.
Third, this is
proportionality for an adult face, so our eyes are usually small compared with
the size of our faces. The larger you make the eyes; the harder it is to
maintain realistic proportions...

Since we aren't always shocked or surprised, the eyelid usually covers part of the iris and pupil of the eye. (Unless of course we are looking down and the bottom section of the eye is hidden by our lower lid.)
When viewing the eye (depending on the distance), we often see the width of the lower lid due to the way it sits on the eyeball. I often draw in a small circle or dot to represent the tear ducts, and make the upper eyelash line darker to represent the thickness and size of the lashes in comparison to the lower lashes. I'll put in a few sparse lower lashes, but not too many or too dark, or once again, it starts looking cartoonish. A line is drawn above the upper eyelash line to represent where the upper eyelid ends. This can vary greatly, so there's no shortcut to figure out where it 'should' be.

Beneath the eye; dark shadows, bags and wrinkling will always follow the contour of how the eyeball sits in the eye socket. This essentially mirrors the proportions of the eyelid above, so I think of it as a 'ghost lid’, I draw a partial line to identify where the edge of the curvature ends.

Since the eye surface itself is covered with fluid, it's glossy and reflects light. A good way to bring 'life' to a drawing of an eye is to leave one or two white dots on the pupil. I usually use one dot. Leave that white dot out, and the eyes usually look wrong or lifeless.
Pupil size can vary greatly due to lighting conditions, in bright light, the pupil can be quite small, in low light conditions, and it can be quite large. I generally like to go for the midrange; it gives a more attractive and realistic result.

(If you are drawing from a photograph as a reference and a flash was used, the pupils will be smaller than normal.

To make your drawing more realistic, I'd recommend drawing the pupils larger to give a pleasing result.)

As the eye gazes in different directions, it moves partially out of sight under the upper eyelid and the rest of the face.

This means we rarely ever view the whole circle of the eye (where the eye in this case refers to iris and pupil), so we are always drawing partially to represent this.

When drawing the face, keep in mind the viewing distance you are working with in your image.
If you are close, you'll see a suggestion of lower lashes, width of lower lid and tear duct on the inner corner.

The further away, the more indistinct the details become. Drawing in eyelashes on a distance drawing of the face, appears very cartoonish and unrealistic.

I've been experimenting with new techniques lately just to keep the creativity going, so I just finished a couple of paintings in the last week that were acrylic, but used acrylic gold paint for highlighting. It's very glittery and shiny! I like it! Unfortunately, the paintings are so new, I haven't managed to get good photos of them yet. I'll have to include them in a future post.
Coming up on November 14th to December 12th, 2012, I am one of thirteen artists exhibiting at the Brighton Jubilee Library, a gorgeous venue as the ceiling goes up and up, and there is a wall of windows extending two stories that borders on the street.
My good friend Penelope Oakley, a wonderful artist in the UK and I collaborated on a painting this year that will be a part of this exhibition. As well as the painting image I've embedded above, 'A Dream of Sentient Paisley'. The artworks in this exhibition will be the initial images added in high resolution printing onto a banner that will expand over time called the 'Omnia Scroll'. This is pretty exciting as this is going to be an ongoing projec that expands over time. Penny is in talks to curate further exhibitions in this project path in Italy and Mexico. I'm hoping she manages to get something going for Canada at some point because I'd love to see this come to my home country!
As I post this, I have artwork in two physical exhibitions, one in Berlin, Germany and the other in a very nice local restaurant in Hubbards, Nova Scotia Canada.
The restaurant exhibition, which is at a local establishment called 'The Trellis', is a group exhibition which the local art association I belong to puts on annually in October. It's called 'Home Grown 2012 - A Visual Feast' and started on October 6th and will run until November 3rd. There are some beautiful paintings in there, over twenty artists submitted this year, and as the owner remarked during the hangings, the artwork just gets better every year! Trellis Show 2012
Another local exhibition I have the honour of being included in is occurring starting October 20th and ending on November 3rd, 2012. The exhibition is the result of a local competition called 'Creature Feature', a Halloween show!

Online Exhibitions and Competitions:
Other exhibitions include the '14th Annual Abstraction Juried Online International Art Exhibition' a group show that results from the Upstream People Gallery's competition that ran last month. I managed to place as one of the finalists in this competition (yay!), gaining special recognition for two of my pieces: 'Chaos Out of Confusion' and 'The Ripple Effect'.
Another competition I entered online and managed to win in a month or more ago was on a gallery site called the 'The Abstract Artist Gallery'. Pretty close to my heart, considering my art style! The competition was titled 'The 2012 International Abstract Art Contest' and contained three separate categories where you could win, as well as an overall winner designation. I was lucky enough to win the best in category award for 'Whispers and Other Worlds' with my fantasy abstract piece 'Exhale'.
The arts network in Ferarra Italy that I'm a member of had a competition over the summer, and I was a finalist in it! The Vivid Arts Network Conscious Creation 2012 Fine Art Competition had a good response for entries, so I was quite honoured to win special recognition for my painting 'Mother Earth is Hiding'. The really nice thing about this award is that the artwork was included in an article in the Art Tour Magazine October 2012 issue, check out pages 24 and 31 on the preview link here.
Shadows an online exhibition with the Linus Galleries website, based in southern California, US. The online link is in the process of being created, so I have no link to attach to this one. The painting that placed in that competition is Undersea Fantasy, which I created a nice statement for. It's pretty special to me as it was a product of my nostalgia for scuba diving in my youth!
Years ago, I was quite fond of scuba diving in the northern Pacific Ocean, exploring near the smaller islands around the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The undersea plant life in that cool water is quite different from the bright and colourful areas found in the far southern seas.
Since the ocean is so much colder, the colours are muted, and shadows predominate. The diver experiences a subtle, yet dangerous atmosphere, which makes for an enticing and mysterious experience. In this abstract acrylic artwork, a mass of dark patterns and colours dominate to capture that almost forgotten allure from my past aquatic adventures...
I really liked doing this painting due to the sunset palette of colours I ended up creating there. On this past weekend, my year+ old cat had an epiphany... She caught her first mouse!
I live in a 100+ old house (renovated of course!), and the basement is separate, so mice in the fall can get in if they are determined. And believe, cold mice can get pretty determined!
So, every fall, they come in, and after about a dozen get caught in the mouse traps and it's done.
Mice are pretty gullible, they can't resist the lure of cheese, so the traps work, year after year... Stupid mice! Learn guys, learn! Sorry, I digress...
Misty, (the cat!), heard a noise in the kitchen and figured out that it was terribly interesting. I watched her and saw her develop her stalking style, pretty cool.
Finally, the mouse came out and she got it!
You could definitely feel her excitement, and when my son whooped, she dropped it. A first-timer mistake, she'll never do that again!
The result of this is a cat that is totally obsessed...
She's wandering around wired like she had ten cups of coffee, and only naps intermittently.
And believe me, naps were the point of her day up until now...
Unfortunately, lovely cat though she is, I believe she could go too far on this one...
She doesn't want to sleep at night, she wants back downstairs (NOW!). The mice might come back!
Really, I'd leave her out all night, but she has a bad tendency to destroy plants when not supervised...
I keep telling her, they're not salads, but she isn't listening!

Back to Misty, she can eat, but sleeps intermittently, and as soon as the sun comes up, she figures, at last! And everyone in the world probably knows it's time to rise because of the racket she makes...

I'm really hoping the honeymoon phase ends soon, I'm so definitely NOT a morning person, and cute as she is, this could get old fast;-)
I've noticed myself getting more negative over the last couple of years. Which is a serious issue, because I start to feel like I'm pushing against a wall whenever I try to get something done!
I think this is pretty common for most of us as we get older, but I've got an opinion (when do I not!) that artists are more susceptible to loss of faith in themselves due to our sensitive natures.
That sounds pretty bad, but I think it's a side effect of what artist's do how they are wired.
Maybe we're like racehorses? So skittish and high strung because we are overly aware of everything!
In view of that gibber jabber I just went through above, I decided to take a workshop course on how to change my attitude to life! It's called Blast Off! and it's run by Alyson Stanfield, who runs a site called Art Biz Coach. I've never done anything like this before, so it's an experiment that should be interesting to say the least!
Literally, she has us trying to derail our negative thought trains by working against them with our own 'affirmations' or 'intentions'. We have to create these and repeat them to ourselves daily in order to create the habit of thinking in new ways.
It really does make sense, think about how much time we spend thinking negatively, out of fear of things like disappointment, humiliation, pain and so on... A short time over the course of a day to try to counter that just makes so much sense!
Maybe we all need to just stop and take a breath once in a while and pat ourselves on the back, and affirm that we like and appreciate ourselves. It's not a bad idea!Teresa Younghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00565322758688058310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-847947158651684642.post-76510151056415925522012-08-07T13:27:00.000-03:002015-03-14T13:29:45.317-03:00My Journey Through Life, Evolution of an Artist's StyleMy Journey Through Life, Evolution of an Artist's Style.
It seemed like such a good idea at the time.

In theory anyway. I mean really, it's a natural progression, right? I started off drawing with crayons, just like everyone else in the industrialized world, and then I moved on to pencils, and pencil crayons, and so on... I've used charcoal, solid graphite sticks, pens, and so on...

But I didn't count on FEAR. After years of thinking about it in the back of my mind, I finally got up the gumption to go out and buy it...

I did install it, I really did! And then, fear took over, and I put it back in it's box... You know, because it's so delicate, I don't want to drop it, to step on it by mistake, whatever!

I suppose you might be wondering what I'm talking about by now...

It's a natural progression in our society, it only makes sense... It's a stylus and tablet digital drawing pad. And I don't have clue at this exact moment why I thought I could adapt to something so ALIEN to what I've always done when I draw!

But I have a system that seems to be consistent and sort of works for me. I force myself past my own paralyzing fears by plopping myself right in the middle of them so that I have to do something about them... It's how I learn how to overcome a phobia of water to learn how to swim when I was thirteen... And it wasn't a fear, that was a phobia! I almost drowned at five years old, so the phobia developed out of that, I had fallen into a wading pool and cracked my skull open, and ended up unconscious, face down in the water... I don't remember much, but I do remember the ambulance!

Fear of the Future by Teresa Young

So back to FEAR. I have learned over the years, that the way to force myself into something I want to do and I am really afraid of doing is to get past that wall of fear somehow... Jump in that river, sell that house and move to where you want to be. Huck it all at thirty and go back to school and do something about it! Just don't let it defeat you.

The really hard thing about fear is that once you conquer one, there's always, and I mean ALWAYS, another one waiting in the wings!

But life would be so boring without Fear! If everything was easy, then it wouldn't mean a darn thing when you accomplished anything, no personal buy-in, no jump in your endorphins, no fear....

Ah well, I suppose I take that thingy-bob out of it's box soon and try some of the tutorials and chip away at my fear a bit!Teresa Younghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00565322758688058310noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-847947158651684642.post-31950568186980271992012-06-19T18:22:00.000-03:002015-03-14T13:26:45.124-03:00Web Changes Eat Away At Traditional Markets
Change is good, isn't it?
It seems to me that our world in the middle of fundamental changes in how things are bought and sold. I know that seems like the understatement of the century, but I take a bit of time to notice these things.
In past posts I've commented on how the world around us, and the society we live in has been affected by technology. Being a voracious reader, I've even bought books on the subject, trying to get my head around it.

Do we notice it when we live in it?
Can we really comprehend how widespread a change can possibly be, when we're living in the middle of it?
And make no mistake here, we are all in the middle of this, at least in industrialized countries. Otherwise, the global economy wouldn't have had such an immediate and great effect everywhere when it tooks such a major downturn a few years ago!

Remember when buying was different?
Think about this in a more personal, closer to home way.

When we walked through a mall in the eighties, we saw bookstores, music stores, clothing stores, specialty stores of every description possible lined up in the aisles. To go shopping, most of us went to a mall (be it strip or indoor!) and endlessly looked at merchandise, then decided on what we wanted and bought it. Simple as pie.
We could touch it, try it on, try it out, whatever. It seemed like the only way to do things at the time.
The new, shadowy world of buying stuff online was considered risky, and not many people did it. Just Internet geeks who understood how all those unwieldy search engines worked. Nobody else seemed to find it very convenient, and it was a novelty.

There were other things we bought as well, called services. And everyone used a middleman, such as travel agents (in the case of holidays and business trips!) and realtors (in the case of property transactions). We rented objects such as movies and cars from businesses designed to provide services to us. This was a large sector of local economies the world over.

A small thing happened
But I noticed something scary in the nineties.
It started slow, but eventually, everyone noticed it.
Suddenly, it seemed like every music store I'd ever frequented was having a closing out sale. Over a three or four year period, almost all of them went out of business.
I couldn't stand it anymore, and I asked the manager of one of my favourites just as he was closing his doors. Apparently, selling music CD's online killed the stores in the malls. And only one or two international francises figured out what was coming, and moved part of their business to websites, assuring their survival in the coming storm...
Most of us didn't think much of this, at the time. It seemed pretty innocuous.
Just a glitch!
Little did we know, it was actually a sign of things to come for other industries...
The smartest entrepreneurs jumped on the Internet bandwagon and put their goods and services there before you could say 'Chapters', or 'HMV'.

Store after store goes online
It seemed to start with music stores, then bookstores, then most specialty stores. In order to survive, stores needed to get online to reach a wider market base. It made sense, little stores that cover a tiny niche market had low survivability prior to the Internet. They just couldn't reach enough consumers to cover their cost of doing business.

Want something? Google it!
We started to see Internet sites that catered to business sectors that were never widely seen previously. And Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, they all helped the consumer find these little stores.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) was born, and people began selling that as a service as well.
Dictionaries and encyclopedias were now found in just about every garage sale. Who needed them? All we had to do was go to the Net and answer our questions quickly and easily.
Mind you, this created a whole new mentality, if we couldn't get what we wanted, be it information or stuff, we lost interest very, very quickly.
Marketing became an even bigger business than before as it modernized with the growth of the Internet.

A Brave New World! (with apologies to writer Aldous Huxley)
We all became quite used to stores being put out of business by online sites, and suddenly it became the way to do business everywhere. This actually wasn't a bad thing, as market reach expanded, the necessity to locate your business in a city declined. Now, many online stores are located in out of the way places, business is decentralizing, leading to the decline of cities as business centres. (Suck it up cities, it's about time, you did the same thing to country based industries and stores years ago!)
It was as if someone gigantic entity had through a huge spiderweb over the Earth, and it connected everything whereever it settled. The global economy became a daily reality.

Then Something Changed
But change isn't a static force, it just keeps burgeoning forward, like some sort of major organic life form gobbling up it's food source.
We can never be sure where it started, it was so insiduous, but the first noticeable market casualty was the travel industry.
All of a sudden, Expedia<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">© and Travelocity<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">© were everywhere. Why bother calling a busy travel agent when you can book online? And the deals, no high overhead, remarkable flexibility, travel agents couldn't compete with the scale and convenience.
The travel industry was revolutionized by the advent of online software sites that allowed you to check the data on travel bookings, air flights, hotels, everything to plan your trips with ease. This destroyed the demand for travel agents, and only a small minority of existing travel agents survived the revolution.
This new type of industry focus is now happening in the Real Estate industry, boards that used to control the data of listings within that industry have been forced to downsize as Zillow<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">© and Top Producer<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">© consumer sites eat away at their market share. Large companies are forced to compete with small, online companies that adapt to the changing market more quickly thanks to Internet tools and flexibility of thinking. As it happened in the travel industry, consumers are starting to by-pass real estate agents, the middleman is starting to disappear.
It's starting to hit many industries in turn, art galleries, retails stores of any description, services that require some sort of coordination, these are all becoming transformed into something new and different via the Internet.

Mobile Technology Drives Change Away from Established Websites
Things are moving forward faster and faster, and none of us know where it's going next, as consumers rapidly adapt to tablets and phones as their interface of choice.
Since people are on the go constantly, they interact with websites all the time, and there's a whole new industry dedicated to optimizing for mobile devices, creating apps for download, and getting rid of the extra chaff on a site so the mobile users are attracted to a site and keep coming back.
For instance, on my artist website, two thirds of the traffic through the site is on mobile devices. And this is probably not confined to art websites, but to websites in general.
Speaking of art websites, with the swell of mobile surfing, artsites that get the most hits are the ones that have moved away from flash animations and static pages that don't adjust well to differing mobile screen sizes.
Maybe we all need to rethink our blogs and websites to adapt to a changing world.
